I used to grow in the final pot. When I switched to the air pots, I just didn't feel like I could keep the surface of the soil moist enough to keep the seedling happy. Probably mostly my imagination. As so many things are.

I use pro mix, it's a soiless medium, so it will not burn plants unless over fed. I prefer pro mix hp the bx has s little to much vermiculite in it which tends to concentrate food. You can mix up your own batch with bat guano, kelp etc.
It's good shit.
