I once found the following quote on a forum:

I've yet to find any real figures on THC absorption in the lungs. Some people say only 15% of inhaled marjiuana smoke is absorbed into the lungs (meaning 85% of the THC is exhaled). Other people say 85% of the THC is absorbed into the lungs, with 15% of the exhaled smoked being THC. I have always said 85% of the THC is absorbed into the lungs within the first seconds of inhalation, which is a safe number, but after some research here is what I've come to conclude:

Deep inhalation and breath-holding used in attempt to absorb more THC in the lungs only increases the absorption of tar and other carcinogens. A study done by a group of doctors in Canada (Dalhousie University) concluded that more than 90% of the THC is absorbed into the lungs within the first seconds of inhalation. Another study confirms this, but they put their figure at 95% absorption. The study also concluded that within the first hour of smoking marijuana, most of the THC is absorbed completely into the lungs (meaning your lungs don't immediately take in all of the THC at once, but over the course of an hour they take it all in). The complete elimination of any trace THC has been put at 53-55 hours, which could explain while some people experience a lingering high a couple days after smoking. An almost deja-vu high if you will.

Conclusion: your lungs literally absorb 85-95% (average 90%) of the THC within the first second of inhalation; holding in a hit does nothing to increase the high, and any high experienced is either (a) placebo or (b) due to oxygen intoxication (meaning, breath really fast for 30 seconds and you'll get lightheaded and dizzy, that's oxygen intoxication).

I forgot to add that the 5-15% of the THC that isn't absorbed is probably due to the THC loss in trace smoke and not your lungs inability to absorb a chemical. You don't see cigarette smokers taking a hit and holding it in for 10 seconds, they get that "buzz" literally in the first second of taking a hit.

It's evidently true. You get 95% of your hit within five seconds and holding any longer will only hurt your lungs more. The part which really trikes truth is about "a lingering high a couple days after smoking. An almost deja-vu high if you will." I've experienced it a couple times after coughing really hard the next day. But the problem is I cannot seem to independently verify the fact of a lingering high, as google search results lead back to this quoted passage. It's a circular tautology. Can anyone of you shed some scientific light on this fact checking?

I have no idea, but its interesting though. I myself have never given it much thought. Either way the tar is going to hurt at least somewhat no matter how long its held, because i mean, it is tar after all. I'd be more interested to see a study done using vapes, i think it would more clearly show how much thc is being absorbed

I have no scientific proof but I have better...I believe it so hah! but honestly tho it makes sense if you dont think about it
